What is Canyoning? Your Complete Guide to Hrčavka Canyon
What Exactly is Canyoning?
Canyoning is one of the world's fastest-growing adventure sports - and Hrčavka canyon in Sutjeska National Park is one of the best places on the planet to try it. Descend a wild river canyon using a combination of hiking, swimming, jumping, abseiling, and scrambling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Balkans. No prior experience required. Just show up ready for an adventure.

Why Hrčavka is One of the Best Canyoning Destinations in Europe
Canyoning (also called "Canyoneering") is the descent of a river canyon from point A to point B using a mix of techniques: hiking, climbing, rappelling down waterfalls, swimming through natural pools, and sliding down water chutes. It requires ropes, harnesses, helmets, and specialist gear - all of which we provide. According to Red Bull, canyoning is one of the fastest-growing adventure sports in the world, and once you try it, it's easy to understand why.
Hrčavka is a river in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, flowing entirely through Sutjeska National Park. It springs at 1,570 metres on the Zelengora mountain ridge and drops 1,030 metres before joining the Sutjeska river — carving a spectacular narrow canyon filled with waterfalls, deep turquoise pools, natural waterslides, and vertical drops up to 10 metres along the way.
What makes Hrčavka special:
- Natural waterslides, jumps up to 5m, and abseiling down waterfalls — all in one canyon
- Crystal-clear water fed by the Perućica primeval forest catchment area
- Completely wild and unspoiled - no tourist infrastructure inside the canyon itself
- Located inside Sutjeska National Park, home to Europe's last primeval forest and ranked among the 25 Best Places to Travel by Gear Patrol
Skakavac Waterfall - The Hidden Giant
Deep inside Hrčavka canyon lies Skakavac waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina at 75 metres (246 ft). Formed at the edge of Perućica primeval forest, it's visible from the Vidikovac lookout point and is one of the most dramatic natural sights in the entire Balkans. Getting there on foot is challenging - getting there through the canyon is unforgettable.

About Perućica Primeval Forest
No prior experience is needed whatsoever. Before entering the canyon, every participant receives a full safety briefing from our certified guides. We take care of everything - you just need the willingness and desire for adventure.
Hrčavka flows through the catchment area of Perućica, one of only two remaining primeval forests in Europe and often called "the lungs of Europe." Perućica covers 1,434 hectares and is home to over 170 species of trees and shrubs and more than 1,000 species of herbaceous plants, many of which are endemic. In 2017, Bosnia nominated Perućica for the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you canyon Hrčavka, you're moving through one of the most ecologically significant landscapes on the continent.
