Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most underrated hiking destinations in Europe - and Sutjeska National Park sits at the heart of it. This strictly protected wilderness covers over 17,000 hectares of mountain terrain, ancient forest and river canyon, sheltering ecosystems that have remained untouched for centuries. Whether you are an experienced hiker looking for a serious mountain challenge or a first-timer wanting to explore nature at a comfortable pace, the trails here offer something genuinely extraordinary at every level. The hiking routes in this region go beyond scenery. Inside Perucica Primeval forest, one of the last old-growth forests in Europe, you walk beneath trees that have stood for centuries with no human intervention. Trails climb above the treeline to glacial lakes that reflect the surrounding peaks in complete silence. Along the Tara River Canyon, paths reveal canyon views that most people never see because the only way to reach them is on foot. This is hiking in a landscape that has not been packaged, managed or diluted for mass tourism.Regular hiking builds endurance, strengthens muscles and improves cardiovascular health. Studies consistently show that time spent in natural environments reduces stress, lowers anxiety and improves overall mental wellbeing. In a setting like Sutjeska, those benefits are amplified by surroundings that feel genuinely wild - because they are.
