Sutjeska National Park is home to something Europe has almost entirely lost, a true primeval rainforest. Perucica, one of the last preserved old-growth forests on the continent, covers over 1,400 hectares of ancient beech and spruce, untouched for centuries. Trees soar past 60 meters, moss carpets every surface, and the 75-meter Skakavac Waterfall thunders from the forest heart into a mist-filled gorge below. Just beyond the forest, beneath the jagged ridgeline of Mount Maglić, Bosnia and Herzegovina's highest peak at 2,386 meters, sits Trnovacko Lake. Formed by glaciers and perched at 1,517 meters above sea level, this remote alpine lake is famous across the Balkans for one extraordinary feature: seen from above, it is shaped perfectly like a heart.
